Abraham Lincoln was a legendary wrestler, and this is something many know. But where did he wrestle? What other sports did he play in his lifetime? This article will cover that topic.
Lincoln could have been one of the greatest wrestlers to ever live from his time if it wasn’t for the fact that wrestling was not an organized sport back then. He also tried cricket but gave up quickly because it was too dangerous to play such a rough sport while carrying on with work and looking so respectable as he was busy writing speeches and doing all of the good deeds that make him stand out as a true hero of our nation. He had a few friends and associates who played, but it was more of an everyday thing, like baseball in the 1900s was for some.
Lincoln’s Sport of Choice: Wrestling
Lincoln loved and was good at wrestling. He was able to get into many matches without any injuries showing up on him. Despite his age and other responsibilities, he would still be wrestling as an adult. His father taught him how to wrestle when he was young. Lincoln had a special match with Joshua Speed while Lincoln was living in Kentucky, where they had a match of strength and skill where Abraham whips out the biggest muscles around and beats Speed down with them while standing over him in an amazing feat of strength. Also, during his time in law school, Abraham wrestled with his classmates. He said that he was the toughest wrestler they had as well.
Lincoln’s wrestling matches were not held in a ring. He was allowed to wrestle barefoot and with no protective equipment like all the other wrestlers were, so he could get into it more easily.
Lincoln was so good at wrestling that he went one-on-one with his opponents when they refused to give up. He would run into the ring and grapple with them even though they had a larger size or were much stronger than him.
Abraham Lincoln Competed in Other Sports
Lincoln was not just a great wrestler when he was younger but also played many other sports as an adult. Lincoln was above average in all of the sports that he played in his lifetime, which is to say: baseball, football, and even ping pong (a sport I know nothing about).
He used to compete in baseball and football with his friends. He was a surprisingly good wide receiver and was so good at catching that he would catch the ball in his hat, his belt, his suspenders, or whatever else he had to catch it with. He was also part owner of a baseball team called the “Maroons,” after their colors, and they were very good.
Lincoln was always great at sports when he played them up until old age, but when he reached old age at 65 years old, it is said that he played chess all day in the White House.
Lincoln is also known for playing ping pong when he was just a kid. He was one of the best at ping pong, too. Lincoln played soccer after it had been invented, along with football and baseball. He played soccer in the White House all day with his friends from Congress, such as Thomas Brackett Reed, who founded a club called the “Society Of Washington Footballers,” and Lincoln would be one of their members since he got soooo good at football like that.
Nothing is known about the rules that Lincoln played soccer under, but I think it’s safe to say that he had a great time playing that. He was very good at soccer, considering he was one of the first to play it in public.
Conclusion
Lincoln was a very well-rounded athlete when it came to sports other than wrestling. He wasn’t just a wrestler; he played many other sports. He was very athletic for his time period and was respected as such. Wrestling was only one of the many sports Lincoln participated in.
Lincoln always had a good time with his friends playing these other sports that were not as popular any more than they used to be.
